Want to cruise to France and Italy, but don’t want to go where the big ships go? Then try a seven-night cruise aboard Seabourn Legend. The May 2 sailing travels from Monte Carlo to Rome visiting smaller ports, like Sanary-sur-Mer (a beach-side village in Provence) or Portovenere (gateway to Italy’s famed Cinque Terre). Be prepared to be active because there’s only half of a sea day on the entire itinerary! Fares start at $2,824 per person and include open bar throughout the ship, all gratuities and gourmet dining, with menus created by celebrity chef Charlie Palmer.

I am not a big fan of the 4,200-passenger Norwegian
Epic, a mammoth new cruiseship of
NCL that begins sailing in June. Press releases of Norwegian Cruise Line depict the mammoth ship as more of an amusement park than a seagoing vessel. They stress its multiple rock-climbing walls, its rappelling wall, the most bowling lanes of any ship, and its Ice Bar and other lounges “with non-stop entertainment day and night”. They rhapsodize about its celebrity impersonators (”Legends in Concert”) and its “Howl at the Moon” show of dueling pianos. You can be fairly sure that I won’t be on board.
But I am tremendously intrigued by an unusual innovation claimed to be used solely by single persons traveling alone on the Epic: 128 studios designed and priced for single occupancy and selling for as little as $799 for a seven-night cruise that will alternate between eastern and western Caribbean itineraries. These compact, 100-square-foot cabins will bear no single supplement, and will go on sale this coming Monday, January 18. They will also have access to an exclusive “Studio Lounge” stuck in their midst, where singles can take a coffee and meet with one another. Match-ups at sea!
Here’s a genuinely new development (as long as these single passengers don’t really expect to enjoy a classic maritime cruise; they might even be unaware that the ship has gone to sea!).
