My daughter Pauline is the only human being I know to have spent two consecutive months as a tourist in Las Vegas. She did so while performing the research that led to the writing of Pauline Frommer’s Las Vegas. In addition to staying overnight in each of more than 40 hotels, she attended a school for croupiers, one for cocktail waitresses, ventured into every exotic venue, and subjected Sin City to an analysis as candid and forthright as a medical textbook (but far more interesting).
Recently, she blogged about the current tendency of Las Vegas’ business interests to concentrate on both costly and highly inexpensive facilities. I have her consent to reprint her blog post here:
In the most recent edition of the New Yorker is an article that, if I hadn’t known better, I would have assumed was written 3 years ago. Called “The Truffle Kid” it follows the […]

- Las Vegas Travel Still Plummeting
For the sixteenth straight month, traffic to Las Vegas' MaCarran Airport dropped. At this point it's becoming old news, but is there any end in sight?
Yesterday, under the tantalizing title of “London for Free,” British Airways launched a ten-day sale (valid for booking through August 19) of its airfares to London. Book a British Airways flight to the British capital, scheduled for any date from late October through mid-December, and the airline will arrange for you to receive two nights totally free of charge at your choice of several tourist class (or lower first class) hotels (like the Royal National or the President near Russell Square, or the Thistle Euston near Euston Station). Since these are hotels whose normal room rates per night during the off-season range from about $160 (£100) at the Royal National or President to $285 (£190) at the Thistle for a double room (including tax), your per person saving is about $160 to perhaps $285 — and that’s a valid lure.
